ROUNDUP Men’s basketball

HORIZON

Cleveland St. 67, Kent St. 41

CLEVELAND — J’Nathan Bullock had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cleveland State. Cleveland State (9-4) allowed Kent just 17 points in the first half as the Golden Flashes shot 24 percent from the field. Cedric Jackson added 11 points for Cleveland State, and Norris Cole had 10. Chris Singletary led Kent State (5-6) with 13 points, and Tyree Evans had 12.

Butler 74, No. 14 Xavier 65

CINCINNATI — Matt Howard and Gordon Hayward both scored 19 points, and Butler turned back one late Xavier rally after another to beat the Musketeers, the Bulldogs’ first win over a ranked team in more than a year. Butler (10-1) hadn’t beaten a ranked team since its 62-59 victory over No. 18 Maryland in the 2007 NCAA tournament. This one came against a team that suddenly looks lost. Xavier (9-2) was coming off an 82-64 loss to Duke on Saturday.

Ill.-Chicago 65, Toledo 55

TOLEDO — Spencer Stewart scored 15 and Scott VanderMeer had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead Illinois-Chicago. The Flames (8-3) pulled to a 17 point lead with 1:31 left in the first half and went into the break ahead 36-21. It was the fourth loss in a row for the Flames (2-9), who never had the lead. They were led by Justin Anyijong’s 13 points. Tyrone Kent and Jonathan Amos added 12 apiece. Tori Boyd came off the bench to score 11 points for Illinois-Chicago.

Detroit 67, Cent. Michigan 55

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Thomas Kennedy had 19 points, including 13 points over a four-minute stretch in the second half, to lead Detroit. Kennedy spurred on a 22-8 run in the second half that gave Detroit (4-7) a 54-39 lead with 7:49 to play and allowed the Titans to get their first road win of the season. Central Michigan (3-8) was called for 30 fouls in the game, while Detroit went 29-for-33 from the free-throw line.

TOP 25

Portland St. 77, No. 7 Gonzaga 70

SPOKANE, Wash. — Jeremiah Dominguez scored 25 points and Portland State upset Gonzaga for its first win over a ranked team since it reinstated its basketball program for the 1996-97 season. Portland State (9-3), which relied on a short, quick lineup, managed to outrebound the Zags 39-30. The Vikings kept the lead by hitting 12 3-pointers. Gonzaga (8-3) was coming off an 88-83 overtime loss to No. 2 Connecticut on Saturday that resulted in the Bulldogs rising one spot in the Top 25. But they looked sloppy against the Vikings, committing 11 turnovers, missing layups and shooting only 42 percent.

No. 12 Georgetown 76, Florida International 38

WASHINGTON — Austin Freeman scored 17 points, Chris Wright had 14 and DaJuan Summers added 13 to lead Georgetown. The Hoyas (9-1), who won their sixth straight, open Big East play on Dec. 29 at No. 2 Connecticut. The Golden Panthers (4-9) scored the fewest points in their history. Florida International dressed 10 players — five of them walk-ons — and it was quickly apparent they weren’t in the Hoyas’ class. Georgetown led 23-4 with 10:31 left and were ahead 43-16 at halftime.

No. 20 Arizona State 90, Idaho State 55

TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State buried Idaho State with a school-record 17 3-pointers. James Harden, who made 3-of-6 3s, scored 18 points in just 26 minutes as Arizona State improved to 10-1, matching its best start in 34 seasons. All five Arizona State starters hit double figures.

Illinois 75, No. 25 Missouri 59

ST. LOUIS — Demetri McCamey scored all but two of his 20 points in an almost perfect first half, helping Illinois manhandle Missouri for its ninth straight victory in the annual Braggin’ Rights game. Leo Lyons had 22 points for Missouri (9-2), which flopped one day after cracking the Top 25 for the first time in nearly five seasons on the strength of a seven-game winning streak. Illinois led by 20 points in the first half behind 55 percent shooting and cruised to its fifth straight victory overall.
