COLUMBUS — Gov. Ted Strickland named Columbus Councilman Kevin Boyce as the next state treasurer, effective Jan. 6.
“As state treasurer, Kevin will provide effective and experience management over our state dollars, and he will also provide Ohioans with the knowledge and resources they need,” Strickland told reporters during a press conference in his Cabinet Room on Tuesday morning.
Boyce, 37, has served as a city councilman for nearly eight years. He is a former chief of staff for the Ohio House minority caucus and led the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus.
Boyce is a graduate of Columbus East High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s in public administration.
The treasurer’s office manages state assets and investments. Boyce said he intended to “wisely, safely and strategically invest those [taxpayer] dollars, not only to ensure good returns but to help strengthen our communities and our businesses.”
And he said he would adhere to the “highest standards of integrity and bringing the smartest minds together as we work to meet the challenges before us.”
Boyce will replace Treasurer Richard Cordray, who was elected attorney general in November and who will assume those duties in January.
Nancy Rogers, dean of Ohio State University’s law school, has served as attorney general since May, with intentions to remain in place until electors selected a successor.
Cordray will complete the term of Marc Dann, who resigned after a scandal that included allegations of sexual harassment and improper use of campaign and transition finances.
A report released Monday by the state inspector general detailed alleged wrongdoing and improper activities during Dann’s administration. Dann has denied criminal involvement and said the report findings were biased and untrue.
