Wright St. captures San Juan Shootout

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico — John David Gardner scored 14 points, and Wright State used strong defense to beat Murray State 57-41 on Monday to win the San Juan Shootout.

Wright State (6-7) held the Racers (6-5) to 27.7 percent shooting from the field (13-of-47) and 0-of-15 shooting from the 3-point line.

Cory Cooperwood’s layup put the Raiders ahead 43-31 with 8:18 remaining in the game.

Todd Brown scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Raiders.

Gardner had six assists.

Danero Thomas was the only Murray State player to score in double figures with 13 points.

Loyola Chicago 89, SIU-Edwardsville 65

CHICAGO — Darrin Williams scored 17 points to lead Loyola. Leon Young and J.R. Blount each scored 16 points for Loyola (7-5), and Justin Cerasoli added 13.

Young also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Loyola led most of the way and took a 49-35 lead early in the second half, but SIU-Edwardsville (2-9) reeled off nine points in a row to cut the margin to 49-44.

The Ramblers held the Cougars to two field goals over the next eight minutes to take a 71-55 lead.

Loyola coach Jim Whitesell cleared the bench for the final four minutes.

The Ramblers shot just under 60 percent from the field. Loyola outrebounded the Cougars 40-29.

Barry Wellington led SIU-Edwardsville with 16 points. Mark Yelovich added 14 points.

UCF 85, Valparaiso 60

ORLANDO, Fla. — Jermaine Taylor scored 21 points to lead Central Florida.

Taylor, who hit four 3-pointers in the game’s first six minutes, finished 6-for-8 from beyond the arc for the Knights (6-4).

Isaac Sosa came off the bench to add 15 points and Tony Davis finished with 11 points and six rebounds for UCF.

Brandon McPherson scored 12 points and Cameron Whitt added 10 for the Crusaders, who suffered their fourth consecutive defeat.

Bowling Green 77, Towson 58

BOWLING GREEN — Darryl Clements scored 18 points to lead Bowling Green.

Chris Knight came off the bench to add 13 points and Brian Moten had 12 for the Falcons (5-5).

Cincinnati 79, Ark.-Pine Bluff 49

CINCINNATI — Yancy Gates, Steve Toyloy and Deonta Vaughn all scored 14 points to lead Cincinnati.

Dion Dixon added 11 for Cincinnati (10-2), which has won four straight since losing to cross-town rival Xavier.

Gavin Montgomery had 18 for the Golden Lions (1-9), and Ricky Parks had 12.

Ohio 58, Holy Cross 53

ATHENS — Jerome Tillman had 18 points, going 4-of-4 from the field and 9-of-11 at the free throw line, to lead Ohio over Holy Cross.

Steven Coleman added 14 for Ohio (5-6), which had a season high 13 steals and extended its non-conference winning streak to 24 games.

R.J. Evans had 16 points for Holy Cross (3-8), which had a season-high 27 turnovers.
