YOUNGSTOWN — Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley has received $35,000 from the Dominion Foundation.

Because Second Harvest, at 2805 Salt Springs Road, is able to distribute $15 worth of food for every $1 donated, Dominion’s gift will enable the food bank to purchase and distribute $525,000 worth of food this holiday season and into the new year. The food bank provides food to 165 hunger relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, said Mike Iberis, food bank executive director.

An energy provider, Dominion Resources, through its philanthropic arm the Dominion Foundation and its employees, is donating $1.1 million to food banks in 14 states. For the year, the Dominion’s foundation and its employees invested $27 million and 120,000 volunteer hours in programs to improve the quality of life for people in the states where Dominion operates power stations, natural gas and other energy facilities.

“Dominion wants to help our neighbors who are encountering hardships during the current economic downturn,” said Bruce C. Klink, Dominion East Ohio president. “This contribution will help put food on the table for many families in need throughout the Mahoning Valley community during the holiday season.”

“We extend our sincere thanks to the Dominion Foundation for its help during this very difficult time for many families in our community, and we appreciate Dominion’s ongoing support of our efforts to feed those in need year-round,” Iberis said.
