Boil alert in Campbell
CAMPBELL — A boil alert is in effect for the city.
The alert was put into effect as a precautionary measure after a water main break around 12:30 a.m. Monday at Robinson Road and Jefferson Street.
The Campbell Water Department is asking residents to boil all water used for cooking and drinking until noon today.
According to the department, the break has been repaired and was not as critical as originally thought.
Robbery investigated
BOARDMAN — Police are investigating a robbery that occurred at a Market Street motel.
A 28-year-old Youngstown man told police that he met a woman early Sunday at a Hilda Street bar. The woman invited the man to the Tower Motel, Boardman, where she was staying. When the pair went into the motel room, a man struck him in the head and then pointed a gun in the victim’s face.
One man continued to beat the victim while another went through his pockets. The two robbers took $400 cash, a cell phone, gold chain and an earring from the victim before leaving him in the motel room, a police report said.
Hearing rescheduled
AUSTINTOWN — A pretrial hearing on Monday for Gary Short was rescheduled. Judge David D’Apolito, of the Mahoning County Area Court, postponed the hearing by request of Short’s attorney. Short, the Austintown Colts Youth League treasurer for the 2008 season, will appear in Mahoning County Area Court at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 29 for a pretrial hearing on fifth-degree felony charges of theft and forgery. He is accused in a police complaint of misusing $3,000 from the league’s fund by forging the signature of organization President Jeffrey Jones, then writing three more checks to cash and keeping the money. If convicted, Short could face between six and 12 months of jail time for each charge.
Store is robbed
AUSTINTOWN — Two employees of a South Raccoon Road check-cashing store reported being robbed by two armed men.
Shortly before 7 p.m. Friday, the employees of Check and Go said two men came into the store with guns drawn. One of the employees pushed the store’s panic alarm.
One of the gunmen ordered the women to the floor while the other told them to open the store’s safe. The men threw plastic bags to the women and ordered them to fill the bags with the safe’s contents.
After putting money into the bags, the women were ordered into the store’s restroom, and the men fled.
It was undetermined at the time of the report how much money had been taken.
Man dies in house fire
SALEM — A city man died in a house fire Monday, said fire Lt. Rod Hughes. Raymond Lee Hilliard, 54, died in the blaze at his home at 271 Ohio Ave. Hughes said the call came in at 3:36 a.m. for fire at the two-story house. The cause of the fire, which destroyed the home, is under investigation. A state fire marshal was at the scene Monday, Hughes said.
