Coach Miller resigns

SALEM — Bill Miller has resigned as Salem High football coach after three seasons at the helm, the Morning Journal reported.

His resignation was accepted by the Salem Board of Education.

Miller said he wants to focus on another job.

“At this point in time, my focus is to be a father and husband,” said Miller. “I’m a young guy and maybe down the road I’ll get back into it. But being a father and husband is a good job.”

Miller’s three-year record at Salem is 3-27, including 0-10 this past season.

Miller will continue teaching high school health and junior high physical education at Salem.

Perfilio selected

FARRELL, Pa. — Terry Perfilio, a senior at Farrell High School, was selected a first-team offensive lineman on the Associated Press Pennsylvania Class A all-state football team.

Making second-team all-state were Laurel junior receiver Jake Dando and Farrell senior running back Terrell Jackson.

Warzycha hired

COLUMBUS — Robert Warzycha is the new coach of the MLS champion Columbus Crew.

Warzycha was an assistant with the Crew the past six seasons. The 45-year-old takes over for Sigi Schmid, who led Columbus to the championship last month. Schmid was recently hired as coach of the expansion Seattle Sounders FC.

Crew general manager Mark McCullers said Monday other candidates were considered, but none had Warzycha’s soccer expertise, experience or potential.

Through the 2002 season, Warzycha was on the field as a player for 16 years and remains the Crew’s all-time career assists leader with 61. He ranks fourth in points (99).

Brassard out for year

COLUMBUS — Columbus Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard, who is leading all NHL rookies in points, will miss the rest of the season after suffering a dislocated shoulder that will require surgery.

General manager Scott Howson said Monday that Brassard will undergo surgery in early January. He was injured during a game Thursday in Dallas.

The 21-year-old Brassard has 10 goals and 15 assists in 31 games. He is tied for the team lead with three power-play goals and is second in points and tied for second in goals.

Brassard was the sixth overall pick in the 2006 draft and was the NHL’s rookie of the month for October. He has earned points in 20 games this season.

Davis sells race team

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR owner Bill Davis, struggling to keep his team afloat during a fruitless search for sponsorship, has sold majority ownership of both his race team and his engine company.

Mike Held, a California businessman, and Marty Gaunt, an executive with Bill Davis Racing, purchased majority interest from Davis. The duo said they’ve also taken control of Triad Racing Development, which supplied engines, chassis and bodies for all three of NASCAR’s top series.

Davis, who has been in NASCAR for more than 20 years, won the 2002 Daytona 500 with Ward Burton and the Truck Series championship this season with Johnny Benson. But he lost his Cup team sponsor and has been unable to secure funding.

Bacon dies at 66

CINCINNATI — Coy Bacon, a fierce pass rusher during a 14-year NFL career with Los Angeles, Cincinnati and Washington, died Monday. He was 66.

His died in his hometown of Ironton in southern Ohio, the Cincinnati Bengals said. The cause was not disclosed.

Bacon played for the Los Angeles Rams from 1968-72, when he made the first of his three Pro Bowls. He was traded to the Bengals for receiver Charlie Joiner. In Cincinnati, the defensive lineman blossomed as one of the league’s top pass rushers in the days before sacks were recognized as an official NFL statistic.

Medal stripped

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Norwegian rider Tony Andre Hansen was stripped of his Olympic bronze medal in team jumping Monday after his horse tested positive for a banned drug at the Beijing Games.

Hansen was disqualified by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) and banned from the sport for 41‚Ñ2 months.

The 29-year-old Hansen was the best performer on a four-rider Norway team that won bronze under a scoring system in which the top three count.
