Chevron World golf
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Three months after winning the FedEx Cup, Vijay Singh padded his most lucrative year in golf Sunday by making a 10-foot birdie on the final hole for a 5-under 67 and a one-shot victory in the Chevron World Challenge.
Age has never slowed the 45-year-old Singh, and rust doesn’t appear to be much of an issue, either.
Singh has not competed in stroke play since Sept. 28 at the Tour Championship, where he wrapped up the FedEx Cup and its $10 million prize. Three months later, he ran off three straight birdies early on the back nine at Sherwood Country Club, then holed a 10-footer on the final hole to beat Steve Stricker (68) by one stroke.
Masters field grows
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The final official shot of 2008 was a tap-in birdie by Richard Sterne to win the South African Open in a playoff, capping his unlikely climb in the world rankings to be among 15 players Sunday earning a Masters invitation.
Three players on two continents made one final push for the top 50 in the rankings to make the trip to Augusta National.
Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland tied for third at the South African Open and will move up to No. 39, while Lin Wen-Tang of Taiwan tied for sixth in the Volvo Masters on the Asian Tour and will be No. 49.
Augusta National since 2000 has invited the top 50 in the rankings at the end of the calendar year. With no more official tournaments remaining, the final rankings were determined Sunday.

Sterne takes SA Open
PAARL, South Africa — Local favorite Richard Sterne won the South African Open on Sunday after defeating Gareth Maybin of Northern Ireland on the first playoff hole.
The pair were tied at 14-under 274 after 72 holes at Pearl Valley Golf Estates, and Sterne (66) birdied the playoff hole after Maybin (70) pushed his tee shot into a fairway bunker and was only able to make par.
Sterne hit what he described as the best bunker shot of his life on his final regulation hole after pulling his approach left to land in the sand with very little green to aim for.
Adebayor gets carded
LONDON — Robbie Keane’s equalizer gave Premier League leader Liverpool a 1-1 draw at Arsenal on Sunday, with the Gunners playing short-handed after Emmanuel Adebayor’s 63rd-minute red card.
Keane collected a long ball to drive a shot into the roof of the Arsenal net in the 42nd minute. Robin van Persie had scored a quality solo goal for the Gunners in the 24th.
The draw gives Liverpool 39 points from 18 games, but second-place Chelsea (37 from 17 matches) can go on top by winning at Everton on Monday.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez was not at the game because he is recovering from surgery to remove kidney stones.
Swim record falls
MADRID, Spain — Aschwin Wildeboer has broken the men’s 100-meter backstroke world record at the Spanish short-course championships.
The Spaniard’s time of 49.20 seconds Sunday was .13 faster than the mark set by Stanislav Donets of Russia last week in Rijeka, Croatia.
