Trumbull conservation district wins national excellence awards

STAFF REPORT

CORTLAND — The Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District became the first soil and water conservation district in the United States to earn two national district excellence awards in the same year from the National Association of Conservation Districts.

The NACD gave out five awards this year among its 1,000 soil and water conservation districts nationwide.

The Trumbull district, whose offices are in the Trumbull County Agriculture and Family Education Center on West Main Street, received awards in the communications/marketing and membership services categories.

The district’s communications/marketing project involved teaming up with Sharon Speedway and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to conduct an environmental awareness night at each location.

At both locations, announcements, signage and displays about “going green” were used.

At the Scrappers game, children were encouraged to draw posters of the team mascot, “Scrappy,” showing him participating in recycling projects.

In the membership services category, the district was recognized for honoring its “Friends of the Land” volunteers at the district’s annual banquet and providing logo apparel to each volunteer.

The Trumbull district will be honored at the NACD annual meeting in New Orleans in February.
