‘Fine-Tune’ screenings this weekend at Oakland

YOUNGSTOWN — The movie “Fine-Tune,” which was made in Youngstown, will be screened at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Oakland Center for the Arts, 220 W. Boardman St., Downtown. Call (330) 746-0404 for ticket reservations.

“Fine-Tune” was written and directed by Chris Rutushin of Youngstown and stars Mahoning Valley residents Noelle Nackino, Brendan Gauntner and John Maluso. The comedy revolves around a newlywed couple that returns to Youngstown to care for a family member. “Fine-Tune” was released this summer.

Improv comedy troupe plans show at Packard

WARREN — Spot On, an improvisational student comedy troupe based at Kent State-Trumbull, will perform at 7 p.m. Jan. 3 at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. N.W. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the box office at (330) 841-2931.

Spot On takes suggestions from the audience and then creates characters and situations for skits. The show will contain mature content and is not recommended for those under 18.

Proceeds will benefit the Packard Music Hall Foundation. Spot On was created by Dan Parsons and Jenna Cintavey in 2007. Daniel Raymond-Nadon is the faculty advisor.

Film festival is named Oscars qualifier

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland International Film Festival has been named a qualifying festival in the category of Short Films by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Winners of the CIFF Best Live Action Short Film and Best Animated Short Film awards may qualify to enter the Short Films category of the Academy Awards for the concurrent seasons.

‘Menopause’ musical coming to the Byham

The off-Broadway musical revolves around four very different women who share their ups and downs through re-lyricized pop songs.

“We want to bring women together and empower them,” said Kathi Glist, one of the show’s producers. “The show resonates with just about any woman over 40, but the younger women laugh just as hard. It’s a party every night.”

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday; 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Nominate a player for Game of Hope

The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley’s annual Game of Hope Charity Classic wants residents to nominate a player. The Classic is a celebrity basketball game that benefits chronically and terminally ill children in the Valley. It will be at 4 p.m. Jan. 24 at Youngstown State University’s Beeghly Center, and will be broadcast at 5 p.m. Feb. 8 on on Fox 17/62. The teams will be comprised of local celebrities, dignitaries and media members.

The Nominate-A-Player award will be given to a person who donates their time and efforts to improving the Valley, and he or she will play in the Classic. To nominate a player, go to www.thegameofhope.com. Deadline is Jan. 6.

The Classic has raised nearly $20,000 in the past four years.

Weathervane to stage comedic ‘whodunit’

AKRON — Weathervane Playhouse will produce the comic murder-mystery romp “Bloody Murder” from Jan. 15 to Feb. 1.

In the spirit of an Agatha Christie-type “whodunit,” several murder-mystery types assemble for a weekend at the lavish estate of Lady Somerset, a woman of wealth and standing.

When one of the guests is murdered, her Ladyship insists that she and her guests are merely characters in a mystery story written by a perfectly dreadful author.
