Unbeaten Salem squeaks past Niles


NILES — The Salem High basketball team remains unbeaten after Friday’s 54-52 victory over Niles.

The Quakers (4-0) built a 42-38 lead by the end of the third quarter, then held on for the victory.

Mike King and Chris Brown scored 11 and 10 points respectively for Salem.

Ryan Frantz scored a game-high 20 points for the Red Dragons. Joe Moss added 11.

Poland 89, Struthers 55

STRUTHERS — Niko Fatimus’ 21 points included five 3-pointers for the Bulldogs. David Baker scored 17 points.

For the Wildcats, Nate Jacubec scored 13 points and Nick Jacubec had 11.

Lakeview 78, Beaver Local 51

LISBON — Ethan Metheny scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Lakeview, which took a 41-25 halftime lead.

Joel Davis added 20 points and Jarred Clark and Robert Franks each scored 12 for the Bulldogs (2-3).

Shawn Mercer scored 17 points and Brady Gunter added 11 for Beaver Local (0-4).

Newton Falls 75, Girard 39

GIRARD — Marcus Fowler and Tyler Kernen carried Newton Falls to victory.

Fowler and Kernan each scored 18 points. Matt Novotny and Brian Sole scored eight, Todd Medallis had seven and Cody Dillon and Anthony Kline each had six points in the lopsided victory.

The Tiger defense limited the Indians to single-digit points in the first three quarters. Newton Falls improves to 5-0 with the win.

The Indians struggled to get anything started on offense. Patrick Rhodes led the team with 11, included nine points off of three shots from beyond the arc. Donte DelBene added eight more. The Tigers fell to 0-4 with the loss.
