St. Stephen School forming association

NILES — St. Stephen School in Niles is establishing an alumni association for those who attended or graduated from the school.

Classmates needing more information or interested in joining the association are asked to send their name, address, e-mail address, and number of years they attended the school or the year they graduated from the school, to sssalumniniles@gnauk,cmail.com or by mail to St. Stephen School, c/o Mrs. Paula Ekis, 45 S. The school will be celebrating its 140th anniversary during 2009 and is planning a number of events to mark the occasion.

Law firm provides funds for food bank

YOUNGSTOWN — Atty. Mark Standohar represented the Friedman Law Firm when he appeared on the WFMJ Morning Show, where he presented a donation to the Second Harvest Food Bank in conjunction with WFMJ’s “Project Feed Our Valley” campaign.

As he accepted the contribution, Michael Case of WFMJ thanked the law firm for the funds, which will provide food for the less fortunate in the valley.

MCFCFC elects slate of officers for 2009

YOUNGSTOWN — The executive committee of Mahoning County Family and Children First Council, 100 DeBartolo Place, Suite 220, elected officers for 2009 when it met on Dec. 5.

Heading the organization will be:

•Chairman — Rich Vendetti, subsidy supervisor at Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.

•Vice chairman — Claudia Charity, manager of Community Partnerships, Youngstown City Schools.

•Secretary — Deidre Mosley, case-work supervisor at Akron Regional office, Department of Youth Services.

•Treasurer — Rich Denamen, superintendent of Mahoning County Educational Service Center.

Membership in the MCFCFC is open to any person or organization in Mahoning County whose personal interest, public responsibilities or organizational mission is to work with families to ensure the effective collaboration and coordination of county programs.

The executive council meets at 1:30 p.m. the third Friday of each month at the DeBartolo Place site.

Advisory council meetings are held quarterly the third Thursday of March, June, September and December at various sites.

Volunteer recognition is Christmas event

GIRARD — Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Mahoning Valley Inc. will have an annual children’s Christmas party from 1 to 4 p.m. today at Girard High School cafeteria for children in the program and their families.

There will be a catered lunch, and Santa Claus will distribute presents.

A highlight of the event will be the announcement of the 2008 Big Brother and Big Sister of the year and the Volunteer of the Year.

Christian women serve turkey dinners

YOUNGSTOWN — Christian Women United for Jesus, a group of senior citizen women associated with various churches in the area, served free Christmas dinners of turkey and all the trimmings on Dec. 11 to residents at Westlake Terrace and approximately 50 homeless people from the Rescue Mission.

During the event a homeless man received $100 that was donated by McDonald’s, and an expectant mother of three small children received a $100 gift certificate donated by Wal-Mart.
