Plane crashes on lawn, killing pilot

UNIONTOWN, Ohio (AP) — A Piper Saratoga airplane hit a flag pole and crashed on the front lawn of a rural Ohio home Friday, killing the pilot, authorities said.

The plane was engulfed in flames that damaged the garage, but no one was inside the Uniontown home at the time of the crash, said Ohio State Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Tony Bradshaw.

Nobody on the ground was injured, and there were no passengers on board the aircraft, Bradshaw said. The rest of the house was undamaged.

The pilot was attempting to land at nearby Akron-Canton Airport before the crash, said airport spokeswoman Kristie VanAuken.

The crash occurred in a residential area surrounded by farmland, about two miles from the airport. Uniontown is about 10 miles southeast of Akron.
