Mount Union tops Wis-Whitewater, 31-26
SALEM, Va. (AP) — Greg Micheli threw for two touchdowns, Nate Kmic ran for one and Mount Union regained its spot atop Division III football Saturday with a 31-26 victory over defending national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Stagg Bowl.
The Purple Raiders (15-0) won their 10th Division III football title — all coming in the past 16 seasons. Mount Union and Wisconsin-Whitewater have played each other for the championship in each of the last four years. The Raiders won the 2005 and 2006 matchups.
Kmic become the first player in any NCAA division to rush for 8,000 career yards, gaining 88 yards to finish his career with 8,074 yards.
Micheli completed 12 of 19 passes for 262 yards, including the two touchdown passes to Cecil Shorts. Micheli also rushed for 56 yards.
Wisconsin-Whitewater (13-2), trailed 21-7 in the first half, played better as the game went on, but was hurt by its mistakes.
