Bruins 8, Maple Leafs 5

BOSTON — David Krejci had his first NHL hat trick and Phil Kessel scored twice to extend his point streak to an NHL-high 16 games as the Bruins, who nearly blew a four-goal lead, held on to beat the Maple Leafs. Marco Sturm, Marc Savard and Michael Ryder also scored for Boston, which won its 12th consecutive home game and its 12th in 14 games overall. Tim Thomas stopped 18 shots but left after two periods with the Bruins leading 6-5; they had led 5-1 with just over four minutes gone in the second period.

Hurricanes 2, Panthers 1, OT

RALEIGH, N.C. — Joe Corvo scored with 43.3 seconds left in overtime to lift Carolina. On an exceptional individual effort, Corvo took a feed from Ray Whitney in the high slot and faked to get around David Booth before backhanding the high puck past both center Gregory Campbell and goalie Tomas Vokoun. Justin Williams scored his first goal in nearly 13 months and Whitney had two assists for Carolina, which held a 37-20 shots advantage.

Capitals 4, Blues 2

WASHINGTON — Viktor Kozlov had two goals and an assist, and the Capitals extended their winning streak to five games. Tomas Fleischmann and Alex Ovechkin also scored for the Capitals, who have won seven of eight overall and improved to 13-1-1 at home. Simeon Varlamov, summoned from Hershey of the AHL because Jose Theodore is sidelined due to a hip flexor injury, made 29 saves. He has won both of his NHL starts. David Backes scored for the third consecutive game, and Brad Winchester also had a goal for the Blues, who have dropped a season-worst five straight.

Canadiens 5, Flyers 1

MONTREAL — Alex Kovalev scored a goal to reach 900 points, and Sergei Kostitsyn and Steve Begin each had a goal and an assist to help Montreal end Philadelphia’s five-game winning streak. Kovalev scored for the second game in a row. He ended a personal 19-game goal drought Tuesday night in Montreal’s 3-2 loss in Carolina. Matt D’Agostini, Kostitsyn and Begin scored in the opening period for the Canadiens, who ended a three-game losing streak. Guillaume Latendresse also scored for the second game in a row late in the third.

Red Wings 6, Sharks 0

DETROIT — Ty Conklin made 24 saves for his sixth NHL shutout and Pavel Datsyuk had two goals and two assists to lift Detroit. San Jose has the NHL’s best record (25-4-3), but the Sharks lost for the second straight night. They fell at Columbus 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday. The defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings have the second-best record in the Western Conference (21-6-4). Marian Hossa had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings and Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula and Brad Stuart also scored. Brett Lebda added two assists in Conklin’s second shutout of the season. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 22 shots for San Jose.

Avalanche 2, Lightning 1, SO

TAMPA, Fla. — Milan Hejduk was awarded the lone goal in a shootout when Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith was penalized for throwing his stick, and the Avalanche beat the Lightning. Smith’s stick came loose when he was making a save on Hejduk’s backhander. After discussing the play for several minutes, the officials awarded the goal. As Tampa Bay interim coach Rick Tocchet argued the call, some fans threw debris onto the ice. Paul Stastny had the Colorado goal in regulation, and Andrew Raycroft stopped 37 shots.
