Authorities probe fire at Youngstown house

YOUNGSTOWN — Fire department officials are investigating the cause of a fire early Thursday that caused an estimated $15,000 damage to a vacant house at 88 E. Evergreen Ave., owned by Gary Crim Inc.

The blaze, which started in the attic of the structure, was reported at 3:18 a.m. When firefighters arrived, flames were showing on the third floor and the door off the back porch.

The call came from a neighbor. No injuries were reported.

Pedestrian fatally struck by pickup on Route 82

VIENNA — A 47-year-old West Middlesex, Pa., man was killed around 1 a.m. Thursday while walking on state Route 82.

David H. Herrmann was struck while walking on the roadway eastbound, just west of state Route 11, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Herrmann was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jonas W. Cunningham Jr., 38, of Warren was driving the pickup truck that hit Herrmann. Cunningham was not injured.

The patrol is continuing its investigation.

Romanian choir concert at Youngstown church

YOUNGSTOWN — Choir Cedonia, a professional chamber choir from Sibiu, Romania, will perform in a free concert at 6 p.m. Saturday in Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church, 626 Wick Ave.

John Nemes of Hubbard, a graduate of Youngstown State University and now an orthodox theological student in Sibiu, is a member of the choir and helped arrange its stop here during its U.S. tour that included a performance at the White House earlier this week.

The choir will perform Christmas carols in both English and Romanian.

The concert will be preceded by a fish dinner at 5 p.m. A free-will donation will be accepted.

Teen girl says motorist harassed her during walk

WARREN — A 15-year-old city girl reported being harassed by a man in a red pickup truck Tuesday afternoon while she walked along Main Avenue Southwest near Fifth Street.

The girl said the man asked her several questions about where she was going and asked if she wanted a ride around 4:30 p.m. The girl refused the ride, but the man persisted.

After the girl screamed that she did not want a ride, the man “cut her off” by pulling into a driveway in front of her, she told police.

The girl screamed and ran home where her mother decided to take her to the police station to make out a report.

The man appeared to be 30 to 35 years old with glasses. He was driving a newer red Ford extended-cab pickup with two doors.

Leetonia leaf pickup

LEETONIA — The village will make its final leaf pickup with the vacuum machine today, weather permitting.

The machine begins on the village’s north side and then proceeds to the south side.

Residents will still have the option to rake and bag leaves that will be picked up by village workers for the next couple of months.

Would-be robber leaves station empty-handed

YOUNGSTOWN — A man wearing scarves over his face and head and brandishing a silver blue revolver entered the Logan Gas Mart, 1704 Logan Ave., late Wednesday and demanded cash, then fled before getting any money.

The store clerk reported that the man entered the store and walked behind the counter around 11:15 p.m. and demanded money. But shortly after a customer fled, so did the robber.

No one was injured, police said.
