Virginia Commonwealth stops Akron on Maynor’s 30 points

RICHMOND, Va. — Eric Maynor scored 19 of his 30 points in the second half, helping Virginia Commonwealth beat Akron 73-69 on Wednesday night.

Kiril Pischalnikov and Joey Rodriguez scored nine points apiece for the Rams, and Pischalnikov grabbed a game-high 12 boards.

Anthony Hitchens led five Zips in double figures with 14 points. Chris McKnight added 13, brother Brett McKnight and Nate Linhart had 12 apiece and Steve McNees chipped in 10.

Maynor sparked a 19-6 Virginia Commonwealth run during the first half with nine points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist. The Rams (7-3) led 29-20 with 4:18 left in the first.

After Linhart hit a field goal for the Zips (6-4), the Rams scored the final nine points of the half to take a 38-22 edge at the break.

Marshall 73, Ohio 68

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Damier Pitts scored 13 points and dished out 10 assists to lead Marshall.

Pitts scored 10 points and had six assists in a second half in which Marshall held its biggest lead, 58-45, with 9:20 left to play.

The Bobcats (4-6) tied the game at 66 on a DeVaughn Washington layup with 1:28 left to go, but Marshall (5-4) outscored Ohio 5-2 the rest of the way.

Horizon League Detroit 58, Aquinas 48

DETROIT — Thomas Kennedy had 17 points to lift Detroit.

Woody Payne added 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Titans (3-6) and Michael Harrington had 12 rebounds.
