YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University is expected to announce receipt of a $1 million grant from the Kresge Foundation today to be added to its ongoing capital campaign.

The university borrowed $7 million in September for initial financing for the new Williamson College of Business Administration as a prerequisite to being awarded the Kresge funding.

The capital campaign had a goal of $43 million but will now surpass the $46 million mark.

Light bulb causes fire

YOUNGSTOWN — A light bulb left on inside a closet at 2344 E. Shawnee Trail on the West Side ignited sweaters on the shelf, the fire department said. The fire Tuesday afternoon was confined to the closet area. Damage was estimated at $6,000 to the property and contents.

Fondling spurs sentence

LISBON — A Salem man was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison for fondling and taking nude photographs of a 7-year-old girl.

Michael G. Stoffer, 60, of South Lincoln Avenue was indicted on two counts of gross sexual imposition and three counts of using a minor in nudity-oriented materials. The acts took place at a home in Leetonia.

A jury convicted Stoffer on all counts. Judge David Tobin of Columbiana County Common Pleas Court imposed the sentence.

Christmas dinner served

YOUNGSTOWN — A special Christmas dinner will be served from 10:30 a.m. to noon Monday at St. Vincent de Paul Society dining hall, 208 W. Front St. Gifts will be distributed to the homeless and needy of the area.

Teens rob bar patron

YOUNGSTOWN — A bar patron cleaning snow off his car in the parking lot of Irish Bob’s on South Avenue was robbed of his wallet by two armed teenage boys, police said. The 55-year-old Hubbard man was not injured during the robbery that took place around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The boys, one with a rifle and one with a handgun and both wearing hoodies, had been waiting in the shadows, police said.

Free firewood offered

YOUNGSTOWN — Mill Creek MetroParks’ wood storage lot on West Golf Drive, just south of Stitt Pavilion, will be open Saturday for those who want to load firewood. There is no fee for the firewood. Split wood is available, though individuals must load their own wood. The lot will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

No firewood can be removed from Mahoning County because of the quarantine for Emerald Ash Borer. Moving firewood illegally is punishable by fines of up to $4,000.

Only 15 vehicles will be allowed in the storage lot at any one time. Trucks larger than pickup size are not allowed. Trailers attached to trucks are not allowed. Automobiles with trailers under 8 feet are permissible. For more information, call the MetroParks at (330) 702-3000.

Route honors fallen Marine

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Senate passed a bill Tuesday designating a portion of U.S. Route 62 in Alliance the Lance Cpl. Daniel McVicker Highway. McVicker, 20, of Alliance, is buried in that city’s Highland Memorial Park.

A member of the Marines, McVicker was killed by an improvised explosive device in 2005 while driving security detail near Al Quaim, Iraq.

This past April, state Sen. John Boccieri, of Alliance, D-30th, formerly of New Middletown, gave sponsor testimony to the Senate Highways and Transportation Committee in support of designating a portion of Route 62 to honor McVicker.
