Thomas, Rogers going to Hawaii

BEREA (AP) — The Browns have two players headed to the Pro Bowl in an otherwise miserable season.

Offensive tackle Joe Thomas and defensive tackle Shaun Rogers were named to the AFC team Tuesday.

Thomas is headed to Hawaii for the second straight season and will be a starter on the AFC squad, although he plays for an offense that has failed to score a touchdown over the past four games.

He acknowledged that he’s seen some better defensive ends in his sophomore season, but believes he’s improved.

“It’s obviously been a tough season because of the losses and not playing well,” Thomas said. “As a team we had such high expectations. We feel like we’re still a good team, but we just haven’t played to expectations.”

Rogers is making his third trip. He was named to the NFC team following his 2004 and 2005 seasons with the Detroit Lions.

Rogers came to be viewed in Detroit as a talented, but inconsistent player who failed to stay motivated and live up to expectations due to weight and off-the-field problems.

“There were some questions about me at the beginning of the year, and hopefully that does answer some of my critics,” he said of making the Pro Bowl.]

He believes the honor reflects on the Browns’ defense.

“As a whole, we’ve been tough and we’ve held some good teams to low points,” he said.

Kick returner Joshua Cribbs was named first alternate and kicker Phil Dawson was named second alternate.

The Browns have nothing left to play for in a season perhaps even more disappointing than any of the seven double-digit loss seasons over the past 10 years.

For all the Browns’ expectations and talent, the only thing left is to speculate on their next coach and top draft choice.

Browns fans are already wishing for former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher and Ohio State tailback Beanie Wells, who has yet to decide whether he will leave the Buckeyes early for the NFL.

But coach Romeo Crennel and the Browns have another two games to muddle through after losing 30-10 to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.

It was the Browns’ 10th loss just one season after they won 10 games with an explosive offense that earned them five prime-time contests.

That same offense is down to its third-string quarterback and has failed to score a touchdown in a month.

“This season has not gone the way that I wanted it to go ... but it is what it is,” a downcast Crennel said Tuesday. “It’s disappointing; it’s frustrating.”

The toll of the Browns’ fourth straight loss showed after the game Monday night. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards — plagued by dropped passes all season — had a solid game with five receptions for 102 yards, yet expressed his displeasure with Cleveland fans and media.

“I could [not] care less about fans, media, people talking about trading me ... I’ve got a job to do. My job is to catch the football,” he said.
