Poland council mulls sidewalk project

STAFF REPORT

POLAND — Poland Village officials discussed a sidewalk project and improvements to two culverts at their meeting Tuesday night. The cost is estimated at $221,000.

A sidewalk would be built on a portion of U.S. Route 224 between the Poland Post Office and Sunrise Assisted Living of Poland, and would be paid for largely with a transportation and enhancement grant through the Ohio Department of Transportation, Mayor Tim Sicafuse noted.

The first project will likely be improving a culvert near Island Drive and state Route 170, an area that sees a lot of flooding during severe weather, Sicafuse said. The other culvert is on College Street and would be revamped to allow it to hold more water, reducing the risk of flooding to nearby residences, Sicafuse continued. He said that the village would pay about 20 percent of the total cost.

Most of the funding for those projects, which could get under way next spring, will be from Issue 2 money, he said. The village hired MS Consultants Inc. of Youngstown as its engineering firm.
