Capitals 5, Islanders 4

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Alex Ovechkin scored his second goal of the game with 10.7 seconds left in overtime for the surging Capitals, sending the Islanders to their seventh straight loss. The Islanders managed to salvage a point thanks to third-period goals by Andy Sutton and Jon Sim that wiped out a 4-2 deficit. Sim tied it with 2:13 left in regulation with his first goal since being placed on waivers last week. Ovechkin ended it with a snapper past Joey MacDonald, Washington’s 40th shot of the game and his 19th goal this season. He gave the Capitals a 4-2 lead with 3:25 left in the second period. The Capitals have won four straight and eight of 11 to open a 10-point lead in the Southeast Division.

Flyers 5, Avalanche 2

PHILADELPHIA — Mike Richards and Simon Gagne each had a goal and two assists, and Philadelphia won its fifth straight game by beating Colorado. Mike Knuble added a goal and an assist, and Jeff Carter and Joffrey Lupul also scored for the Flyers, unbeaten in regulation in their last 10 home games (8-0-2). Carter is second in the NHL with 22 goals, two behind Buffalo’s Thomas Vanek.

Hurricanes 3, Canadiens 2

RALEIGH, N.C. — Eric Staal scored two power-play goals and Carolina took advantage of the penalty-prone Montreal Canadiens. Joe Corvo added another power-play goal and Sergei Samsonov had two assists for the Hurricanes, who snapped a two-game skid. Cam Ward made 22 saves, including one on a point-blank chance by Montreal’s Alex Kovalev with 10 seconds remaining.

Kovalev scored a short-handed goal for the Canadiens and Guillaume Latendresse connected on a penalty shot. Montreal has lost three in a row.

Maple Leafs 3, Devils 2, SO

TORONTO — Vesa Toskala stopped Travis Zajac on a breakaway in the final seconds of overtime and Jason Blake had the winning goal in a shootout to lead Toronto over New Jersey. Nik Antropov and Jeremy Williams scored in regulation for the Maple Leafs, who have won three straight for the first time this season. Toskala finished with 25 stops.

Thrashers 4, Senators 1

OTTAWA — Colby Armstrong scored a pair of goals 31 seconds apart in the third period and Atlanta ended a three-game losing streak with a win over Ottawa. Ondrej Pavelec stopped 28 shots, losing a bid for his first career shutout on Chris Kelly’s goal with 1:18 remaining. The 21-year-old Pavelec was pulled in the first period of Friday’s 7-3 loss to Boston after allowing three goals on four shots. Slava Kozlov scored his 14th goal midway through the first, and Armstrong increased the lead to 3-0 when he beat Martin Gerber twice early in the third. Todd White scored into an empty net for the Thrashers, who ended a 0-2-1 skid and won for just the third time in 14 games (3-9-2). The Senators have been held to four goals in their last four games.
