Setting an example

AUSTINTOWN — An article about how an Akron company provided gifts for needy families inspired the owners of Ryan Carpet, Jim and Maryann Eickelman, to initiate a similar program in the Austintown area.

This year the couple gave each of their 20 employees a $100 bill to go shopping and purchase toys, clothing, hats and gloves, toiletries and other items for those less fortunate in the community.

The employees enjoyed the shopping experience, and the items they purchased are being given to Trumbull County Children’s Services, to local churches, and to the Toys for Tots program for distribution to deserving individuals.

The Eickelmans, who wanted no recognition for financing the project, hope this unique way of sharing will inspire others to start similar programs.

YOUNGSTOWN — American Legion Post 504 Auxiliary is sponsoring a Christmas raffle.

The ticket donation is $2, with the drawing to take place Saturday at the post, 2225 Glenwood Ave. The prize will be $100 in cash.

There will be a first-place prize of $20 and a second-place prize of $10 for the best dressed at the event.

A donation of $3 will be taken at the door for the 7:30 p.m. dinner.
