Police officer bitten while rescuing dog from fire

AKRON (AP) — A Northeast Ohio police officer caught a baby thrown from the second floor of a burning house but got bitten rescuing the family dog.

Officer Jude Carroll was treated for smoke inhalation and a dog bite at Akron City Hospital after Monday’s pre-dawn rescue.

A woman dropped the baby out an upstairs window to Carroll, and firefighters rescued the woman with a ladder. Carroll then saved the dog on the first floor, but the family pet was frightened and bit the officer.

A man fled the house with burns to his face, arms and legs. The man, woman and baby were treated for burns or smoke inhalation. Fire and police didn’t have names of the victims or their relationship.

Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic praised police and firefighters for their heroism.
