YOUNGSTOWN — An informational meeting for those interested in training for the U.S. SARR Corps, a regional search, rescue and recovery organization, will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department, 110 Fifth Ave. Enter through a door from the rear parking lot.

U.S. SARR has served Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia for 40 years and has been designated the primary search response unit of the Seniors Unit of the sheriff’s department. The unit has been accepted as a participant in CART, the Child Abduction Response Team, for Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Free firewood offered

YOUNGSTOWN — Mill Creek MetroParks’ wood storage on West Golf Drive, just south of Stitt Pavilion, will be open Saturday for those who want to cut and load firewood.

There is no fee for the firewood, but individuals must bring a chainsaw to cut it and must load their own wood. The lot will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

No firewood can be removed from Mahoning County due to the quarantine for Emerald Ash Borer.

Only 15 vehicles will be allowed in the storage lot at any one time. Trucks larger than pickup size are not allowed. Trailers attached to trucks are not allowed. Automobiles with trailers under 8 feet are permitted. For more information, call (330) 702-3000.

Adoption open house

LORDSTOWN — The Animal Welfare Shelter will have a Holiday Adoption Open House every Monday through Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. starting today and running through Dec. 23. There is a large selection of dogs and cats as well as several dogs in the Caring Companions Prison Training Program. The dogs are neutered and will be obedience-trained and housebroken. Each adopter will be given a special kit, a training DVD and pet blanket.

Special meeting set

CRAIG BEACH — Village council will have a special meeting at 2 p.m. today in council chambers at the Craig Beach Municipal Building to update and review 2008 appropriations and accounting status, as well as discuss proposed 2009 appropriation and budget recommendations.
