Bluejays’ Wiseman, Matacic first; Brookfield’s Miller also wins title


ELYRIA — The Mahoning Valley had three individual wrestling champions in the Elyria Catholic Tournament Saturday at Elyria Catholic High.

Tim Wiseman (112) and Johnny Matacic (125), both of Jackson-Milton, went 5-0 to win their weight-class crowns and lead the Bluejays to third place with 173 points in the 17-school field.

Monroeville won with 190 points while Greenview was second with 174.

Dan Miller (145) of Brookfield also went 5-0 to win a title and lead the Warriors to 14th place with 79 points.

Other Jackson-Milton wrestlers placing were Vinnie Pizzuto (103), Santino Pizzuto (119) and Alex Tomaino (135), who all placed second with 4-1 records. Tyler Collins (145) went 3-1 to place fifth and Broc Wilson (160) went 2-3 to place seventh.

South Range placed ninth with 110 points, led by third-place finishers David Huffman (152) and Beau Bowman (171), while Christian Bowden (189) was fourth, Max Brooke (130) fifth, Hayden Brooke (140) sixth, Jared Miller (119) seventh and Chris Scheckelhoof (135) eighth.

Other Brookfield entries placing were Tyle Thompson (119) fourth, Jake Underwood (152) fifth and Steve Varga (189) eighth.

Girls basketball

YOUNGSTOWN — Mariah Snowden hit the game-winning 3-pointer in overtime with less than a minute remaining and finished with 23 points to lift Fitch past Chaney in overtime, 52-51, on Saturday.

Erica Braxton added eight points for the Falcons (3-1).

Marcinde North had 16 points and Whitli Sanders 15 for the Cowgirls (3-1).
