District vice president

Mahoning County Auditor Michael Sciortino was recently elected vice president of the Northeast District of the County Auditors’ Association of Ohio.

The district works closely with the CAAO Columbus Office to monitor legislative proposals that impact local taxpayers and to offer initiatives that assist county auditors in carrying out their duties.

Major initiatives for the upcoming year include school funding and real estate taxation reform, fuel content testing, review of the state’s biennial budget bill and working with the Ohio General Assembly on issues that impact local government.

Sciortino is serving as 2008 secretary/treasurer of the Northeast District of the CAAO and serving on the 2008 CAAO executive committee. He also is serving on the organization’s 2008 technology/cooperative ventures and weights and measures/fuel testing committees.

Trooper of the Year

Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Christopher C. P. Barnes has been selected 2008 Trooper of the Year for the Hiram Post.

The selection of Barnes, 37, is in recognition of outstanding service during 2008 at the Hiram Post. Fellow officers at the post chose Barnes based on leadership abilities, professional ethics, courteous treatment of others, enthusiastic work attitude and cooperation with supervisors, peers and the public.

Barnes joined the patrol in 1993. He began his career at the Van Wert Post and transferred to the Hiram Post in 1995. Barnes is a graduate of Van Wert High School. Before joining the patrol, he attended the University of Windsor and the Northwestern Technical College.

Barnes and his wife, Maricela, live in Girard with their two children, Joshua, 16, and Seth, 14.
