The Vindicators top nine local athletes of fall sports

Fall 2008 will be long remembered around the Mahoning Valley as a season of champions.

Ursuline High won the Division V state football championship, the second title for the school since 2000.

In golf, Poland’s girls team captured the Division II state crown and senior Ariel Witmer of South Range was the individual medalist.

Additionally, there were many individual awards for standout athletes on the conference, regional and state levels.

The Vindicator sports staff has selected nine athletes who distinguished themselves this fall.

Jamel Turner led Ursuline to its state championship from his defensive line position.

Fitzgerald Toussaint of Liberty led the area in rushing yards and is bound for Michigan.

Witmer won the state championship and Bruce Timko of Warren JFK finished ninth in the boys Division III state golf championship.

Amy Scullion led Salem to the Division II district volleyball championship and is widely regarded as one of the top juniors in the state.

Boardman’s Sam Deskin and Monica Ciarnello of Lowellville were the top cross country runners while Mooney’s Jonathon Critell and Ashley Cuba led their soccer teams to district championships.

Inside today’s Vindicator learn more about each of these star athletes, and check out their video interviews at Vindy.com.
