Bethlehem Liberty defeats Bethel Park for state crown, 28-21
HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) — Quarterback Anthony Gonzalez scored on a 1-yard keeper and had a game-ending interception to give Bethlehem Liberty a 28-21 win in overtime over Bethel Park to claim the state Class AAAA title.
Gonzalez ran for two other touchdowns and threw for another for Liberty (15-1) to knock off the previously unbeaten Black Hawks (15-1).
His game-winning TD came on fourth-and-1 before he picked off the pass on defense into the end zone from Erik Olson.
Both teams had turned the ball over on interceptions off deep pass attempts in a tight fourth quarter.
It was the first time in PIAA finals history that there two overtime games in the same championship weekend. Wilmington Area beat West Catholic of Philadelphia 35-34 in double overtime in the Class AA final earlier Saturday.
