Judge denies early release for Niles man convicted in baby’s death

WARREN — Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Andrew Logan has denied early release from prison for a Niles man sentenced to three years for his role in the death of a 14-month-old girl.

Jamie A. Champlin, 29, formerly of Royal Mall apartments, was sentenced to three years in prison in April on a conviction of endangering children, a felony.

He was originally charged with murder after Destiny N. Seybert, his former girlfriend’s daughter, died Sept. 20, 2007.

A doctor determined that the injury Champlin gave the girl by picking her up by the neck and moving her might not have been the sole reason for her death.

Dr. Lisa Kohler of the Summit County coroner’s office said Seybert might have died from second-impact syndrome, meaning that a fall the girl took after Champlin injured her may have contributed to her fatal injuries.
