7th area teacher added to board-certified class

CHAMPION — A seventh area high school teacher has been added to the Class of 2008 of National Board Certified Teachers.

Charmayne Polen, an English instructor at the Trumbull Career & Technical Center, wasn’t on the initial list reported earlier this week by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards which offers the certification.

Her name appeared on a revised list.

She joins three other TCTC teachers — Paula Baco, Dawn Haugh, and Jessica Rishel — Caroline Hines, of Niles, and Amy Hammond and Julie James, of Sharon, in securing the highest credential awarded in the teaching profession.

Sobriety checkpoint set

The Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in the county from 11 p.m. today until 3 a.m. Sunday.

Task force officers will increase enforcement against impaired driving, with zero tolerance for those driving vehicles impaired by using drugs or alcohol.

Locals become citizens

YOUNGSTOWN — Six people became U.S. citizens in a naturalization ceremony this week before Judge Beth A. Smith of Mahoning County Domestic Relations Court.

Their names, hometowns and countries of origin are: Santos Dagoberto Salazar Pineda, Sebring, Honduras; Justin Hsinte Peng, Youngstown, Taiwan; Zeina Younes Zaatari, Austintown, Lebanon; Hasna Fenyanos, North Jackson, Lebanon; Arif Mohiuddin Syed Quadri, Austintown, Pakistan; Jocelyn Louise Buxman, Poland, Ohio, Canada.

Robber breaks in while resident goes shopping

YOUNGSTOWN — A Cohassett Drive resident who went out to do some Christmas shopping returned home to find that someone had done some illegal shopping in her house, helping himself to her property.

The victim, who lives in the 600 block, left home at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and returned about five hours later to find that the back door of the home had been forced open.

The victim reported that a 42-inch plasma flat-screen television, a PlayStation 3 with games, a George Foreman Grill, some meat, some jewelry and silver coins had been taken. The loss was estimated at $2,000.

Apparent fan steals gear

YOUNGSTOWN — Police said someone made off with two boxes of shirts printed with an “East High School” logo from an unlocked truck in a parking lot in the 800 block of Tod Avenue.

The shirts — 70 black T-shirts and 30 black hooded sweat shirts — all have the school’s name in light-blue lettering. They were taken between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Thursday. The loss was estimated at $500.

Resignation opens seat

LISBON — Dr. Craig Dietz, a member of the Beaver Local Board of Education, is resigning his post effective Wednesday, district Treasurer Robert P. Barrett announced Friday.

Police charge woman with stabbing roommate

WARREN — Police charged a Southern Boulevard woman with felonious assault for stabbing a man with a knife in the apartment where they both lived.

Joella Rodgers pleaded innocent to the charge Friday in Warren Municipal Court. Her bond was set at $7,500, and her next hearing will be at 10:15 a.m. Jan. 8 before Judge Thomas Gysegem.

Police said the man, 34, was in stable condition in the hospital after the stabbing.
