The commission identifies and promotes strategies and public policies to foster improvements in the social, economic and educational problems that affect the black male population in Ohio.

The commission started in 1989 as the Governor’s Commission on Socially Disadvantaged Black Males.

The commission had an operating budget of $792,000 for this year and will have an operating budget of $1,292,000 in 2009.

Ohio State University began oversight of the commission on Oct. 1, 2007.
