Springfield needs OT to defeat Brookfield
McDonald, Columbiana and East Palestine earned victories.
NEW MIDDLETOWN — Todd Kibby scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds Tuesday to lead the Springfield High basketball team to a 55-54 overtime win over Brookfield.
Joe Musial contributed 10 points and six rebounds for the Tigers (1-1). Jim Zubick had nine points, four rebounds and three assists.
For the Warriors (0-2), Greg Hunkus scored 18 points and made 12 rebounds. Ryan Shugarts scored 16 points while Cameron Derr had nine.
McDonald 83, Mineral Rige 46
MINERAL RIDGE — McDonald jumped out to a 25-11 first quarter lead and had a 45-25 advantage at the intermission.
Matthias Tayala scored 23 points to lead the Blue Devils (2-0) while Nick Rota added 15. Devin Bansberg scored 11.
Mineral Ridge (0-1) was led by Justin Lasher with 22 points.
Columbiana 55, Youngstown Christian 51
COLUMBIANA — Josh Harold led the Clippers with 13 points and four steals.
Travis Denmeade contributed 12 points while Tyler Denmeade made nine points and six steals. Kevin Blinsky made four assists.
For Youngstown Christian, Olonzo Johnson scored 21 points while John Pecchia had 13.
East Palestine 87, Heritage Christian 48
EAST PALESTINE — Senior guard Brandenn Keylor made 4 of 5 3-point goals in a span of four minutes early in the third quarter to break the game open for the Bulldogs (2-0).
After Austin Cope scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half, Canton Heritage Christian put a box-and-one defense on the junior to start the third quarter. That’s when Keylor took over.
Keylor finished with 16 points. Six-foot-5 center Ben Gysin also had 20 points and 11 rebounds. Gysin was first-team all-league as a sophomore in 2007-08.
Josh Davidson and Josh Moody had 14 points apiece for Heritage Christian (0-2).
Lowellville 64, Heartland Christian 52
LOWELLVILLE — Mauro Amendola scored 23 points to pace the Rockets to their first victory while Anthony Schiraldi chipped in with 10 and he had six steals. Patrick Minnie pulled down six rebounds. Nate Paul and Trey Lunger led Heartland Christian (0-1) with 14 and 11 points apiece.
