Some Mill Creek park roads closing Friday for winter

YOUNGSTOWN — Effective Friday, some roads in Mill Creek MetroParks will be closed in winter.

Chestnut Hill Drive, between Canfield Road and the Kirkmere Spur; High Drive, between the Kirkmere Spur and West Cohasset Drive and Calvary Run Drive between Belle Vista and Milton avenues, will be closed through the winter.

Park roads are closed during the winter months for safety, recreational use, cost savings and environmental issues. Slippery conditions in bad weater can be hazardous for the public and park personnel due to inadequate shoulders, lack of guardrails or steep grades on the roads.

Labor costs of salting/slagging and snow removal can be reduced by leaving the roads in a natural state. The public, however, can use them for hiking, walking, cross country skiing or sledding.

In addition, the natural areas, catch basins and streams in the locations are negatively impacted by the salt and slag used for snow removal.

All roads will reopen in the spring.
