Rotarians airlift clothing to the needy
GIRARD — The Girard/Liberty Rotary Club’s project, “Poorest of the Poor,” continues to serve the poor of Appalachia, the North American Indians on reservations and the unfortunate in disaster areas.
In conjunction with the project, 60,000 pounds of good usable clothing was loaded on two C-130 Hercules cargo planes on Dec. 6 at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna and airlifted to the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean Islands.
The clothing will be distributed to needy recipients at no cost by volunteers from Rotarian clubs and Missionaries of Charity.
Initiated by the University of Notre Dame Alumni and the student body, the project is also supported by Rotary clubs in Canton, Canfield, Cortland, Youngstown, Howland, Boardman, Brookfield and Warren, and by several area organizations and businesses.
Transportation was provided by the 910th Airlift Wing at the air base.
Christmas decorations made by Herb Growers
YOUNGSTOWN — In celebration of the holiday season, members of Holborn Herb Growers Guild participated in two community projects.
The group decorated St. James Meeting House in Boardman Township Park with dried flowers grown by the members and decorated pine trees in the park with ornaments made of Queen Anne’s lace by the members.
The guild also created ornaments to be used on a Christmas tree at the Davis Center in Mill Creek Park celebrating the 50th anniversary of Fellows Riverside Gardens.
Officers will be installed during a meeting hosted by board members at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at Davidson’s Restaurant.
