Wean Foundation announces latest SUCCESS grants


WARREN — The Raymond John Wean Foundation announces the award of its latest round of Neighborhood SUCCESS Grants. The program identifies grass-roots, neighborhood organizations in Youngstown and Warren, reviews their need for funds and awards grants between $500 and $5,000. Grant-making committees made up of neighborhood residents in each city screen applying organizations and make the final funding decisions.

Neighborhood SUCCESS is one of several Wean grantmaking programs. The foundation also gives funding in the areas of community investment and early care and education. The Neighborhood SUCCESS Grant recipients are:

• 7th Ward Citizens’ Coalition- Youngstown- $ 3,872 for block watch signs

• Agape Recreation Center- Warren- $ 4,415 for YES Project

• Beulah Baptist Church- Youngstown- $ 3,600 for Operation Bread Basket

• Community Volunteer Council- Warren- $ 4,000 for children’s school supplies

• Give the Children a Chance, Inc.- Youngstown- $2,000 for a vacant lot gardening program

• Neighborhood/School Association- Warren- $ 5,000 for coats and shoes for low-income children

• Idora Neighborhood Association- Youngstown- $ 1,200 for beautification project

• Neil Armstrong Historical Site- Warren- $ 3,000 for signage and maintenance

• Learning Tree- Youngstown- $ 5,000 for tutoring program

• North East Warren Neighborhood Association- Warren - $ 1,882 for Project Sno Blow

∑ North End Environmental Development (N.E.E.D.) -$5,000 for a community newsletter

• Mahoning County 4-H- Youngstown- $ 3,275 for urban 4-H club

• Stop One Place Help is Available, Inc.- Warren- $ 3,000 for direct assistance to the needy

• Mahoning Valley Bulldawgz- Youngstown- $ 5,000 for little league football

• Mill Creek Jr. Baseball League, Inc.- Youngstown- $ 4,425 for bleacher replacement

• Northeast Homeowners and Concerned Citizens Association- Youngstown - $ 5,000 for Oak Street 2010 corridor project

• Plaza View 2 Incorporated- Youngstown- $ 4,888 for after school enrichment program

• Peruvian Society- Youngstown- $ 4,898 to help immigrants understand American society

• POGO Neighborhood Block Group- Youngstown- $ 2,400 for neighborhood garden

• Sisters of Serenity Mentoring Corp. – Youngstown- $ 5,000 for leadership development

• Sojourn to the Past / Youngstown City Schools- Youngstown- $ 5,000 for historical field trips

• St. Patrick’s Church of Youngstown – Youngstown- $ 5,000 for garden program

• Treez Please, Inc. – Youngstown - $ 5,000 for reforestation program

The next Neighborhood SUCCESS application deadline is March 16, 2009.
