Frazar shoots 59

LA QUINTA, Calif. — Harrison Frazar has shot a 59 in the fourth round of the PGA Tour qualifying tournament, the first player in eight years to hit golf’s magic number at Q-school.

Frazar, winless in 300 starts on the PGA Tour, ran off seven straight birdies on the back nine of the Nicklaus Tournament course at PGA West and closed with a par.

The last player to shoot 59 at Q-school was David Gossett in 2000, who failed to earn his card. Frazar is in much better shape, at 24-under 264 and leading by four shots two rounds to go.

Wie seeks card

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Michelle Wie is in the final group at a golf tournament for the first in more than two years, this time without the pressure of trying to win her first tournament as a pro.

Wie saved par on three of her last four holes Saturday for a 4-under 68 that left her one shot behind former NCAA champion Stacy Lewis at the LPGA Tour qualifying tournament, where the only goal is to leave LPGA headquarters with a full-time job.

Better than being in second place, Wie was nine shots clear of the cutoff for the top 20 players to earn their cards.

Father-Son golf

ORLANDO, Fla. — Larry Nelson brought a different son and wound up in a familiar spot Saturday as he and Drew Nelson put together an 11-under 61 to share the lead with Tom and David Kite in the Del Webb Father-Son Championship.

Greg Norman and his son Gregory were another shot behind in the scramble.

Nelson, a three-time major champion and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, won the Father-Son last year at ChampionsGate with 29-year-old Josh Nelson, his youngest son. Drew Nelson, 32, won the title with his father four years ago and is back for more.

Downhill canceled

LAKE LOUISE, Alberta — The women’s World Cup downhill was canceled Saturday because of heavy snow and shifting winds that caused poor visibility.

Officials decided the conditions “were too variable and there was no guarantee that things were going to improve,” said Jim Brewington, the chief of race.

The decision to scrub the second women’s downhill of the season was made after the original start time was delayed about 90 minutes. It’s the first time since 1995 that weather forced cancellation of a World Cup downhill at Lake Louise.

Galaxy wins 3-0

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — David Beckham didn’t score yet dazzled a crowd of 20,000 New Zealanders in the Los Angeles Galaxy’s 3-0 exhibition win Saturday over Oceania XI.

Beckham produced many of his trademark touches — brilliant crosses or passes into the penalty area — as the Galaxy won easily after scoring three goals in the first half. Beckham was eventually substituted, but his presence thrilled the near capacity crowd at Mt. Smart Stadium.
