COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP Saturday’s games
No. 2 Florida 31, No. 1 Alabama 20: ATLANTA — Tim Tebow threw three touchdown passes — including the decisive score with just under three minutes remaining — to lead the Gators in the Southeastern Conference championship game. The win should be enough to give Florida (12-1) a spot in the BCS title game for the second time in three years. Alabama (12-1) will apparently have to settle for a spot in the Sugar Bowl.
No. 5 USC 28, UCLA 7: PASADENA, Calif. — Mark Sanchez passed for 269 yards and two touchdowns and USC’s hard-hitting defense stuffed UCLA at every turn. The win assured USC (11-1, 8-1 Pac-10) of an unprecedented seventh consecutive BCS bid, seven straight 11-win seasons and seven conference championships in a row. They’ll also made a fourth straight appearance in the Rose Bowl game, where they will meet No. 6 Penn State on New Year’s Day.
Navy 34, Army 0: PHILADELPHIA — Army’s cool new dress code resulted in the same old loss against Navy. With President George W. Bush in attendance, Shun White ran for 147 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Navy to its seventh straight win in the rivalry. Army (3-9) debuted camouflage helmets, pants and uniform numbers.
No. 23 Pittsburgh 34, Connecticut 10: EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Bill Stull threw for two touchdowns and LaSean McCoy ran for another as Pittsburgh won nine games for the first time since 1982 and earned a bid to the Sun Bowl. Pittsburgh scored 24 points in the third quarter to blow open a close game and assure Pitt (9-3, 5-2) a share of second place in the Big East.
Virginia Tech 30, No. 18 Boston College 12: TAMPA, Fla. — Tyrod Taylor scored two first-half touchdowns and Darren Evans ran for 114 yards and one TD in less than half-full Raymond James Stadium, helping Virginia Tech become the first two-time winner of the ACC championship game. The Hokies (9-4), who have won three titles since leaving the Big East for the ACC in 2004, also beat Eagles (9-4) for last year’s crown and earned their second consecutive trip to the Orange Bowl.
California 48, Washington 7: BERKELEY, Calif. — Washington concluded the first winless season in school history, with California’s Jahvid Best rushing for a school-record 311 yards and four touchdowns.
East Carolina 27, Tulsa 24: TULSA, Okla. — Ben Hartman kicked a 36-yard field goal with 1:43 remaining, and East Carolina took advantage of seven Tulsa in the Conference USA championship game. The Pirates (9-4) earned a berth in the Liberty Bowl.
