B. Green rolls over Penguins
BOWLING GREEN — Bowling Green shot 59.6 percent and got 20 first-half points from Tracy Pontius in a 94-61 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday.
The Penguins shot a season-best 49 percent but were outscored 54-26 in the first half. YSU committed 23 turnovers while BGSU committed just 14 — all but three came in the second half.
Tiara Scott scored 12 points for the Penguins and Ashley Pendleton added a season-high eight. Jaquetta Westley added nine for the Penguins (1-7).
Bowling Green (6-2) won its sixth straight.
Pontius scored a game-high 22 points and Niki McCoy added 18 for the Falcons.
Both teams shot 60 percent in the decisive first half, but BGSU outscored YSU 27-3 in points off turnovers. YSU committed 14 turnovers.
YSU was outscored by just five in the second half and limited the Falcons to two offensive rebounds after giving up six in the first half.
Bowling Green jumped out to a 14-2 lead but the Penguins were able to get the margin back to single digits at 15-7 and 17-9, the latter on a layup by Kelsey Gurganus with 13:17 remaining in the first half. Bowling Green then went on an 11-4 run and led 28-13 with 9:27 remaining. A basket by Scott made it 33-19 with 5:42 remaining, but BGSU ended the half on a 21-7 run to go up 54-26 at the break.
The Penguins are off until visiting Central Michigan on Dec. 14 at 5 p.m.
