Niles OT winner over Boardman


NILES — Ryan Frantz scored 28 points and Cory Floyd added 16 to lead Niles High to a 63-58 overtime victory over Boardman in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

The Red Dragons trailed 31-24 at halftime, but outscored Boardman 14-9 in the third quarter and 14-12 in the fourth period to force the extra session. Niles won the overtime, 11-6.

Ryan Pesta scored 25 points for Boardman, while Jordan Karzmer added 18.

Newton Falls 65, Lakeview 62, OT

CORTLAND — Marcus Fowler scored four of his 16 points in overtime while Cody Dillon contributed three of his 18 tallies in the extra session, as Newton Falls pulled away from a 53-53 regulation tie to the win.

Dillon finished with a game-high 18 point while Fowler added 16, Todd Medallis 13 and Brian Sole 11 to aid the Tigers (1-0).

Joel Davis had 17 points and Robert Franks 16 with 10 rebounds to spark Lakeview (0-1), while Justin Clark added seven points and six assists.

McDonald 69, Girard 39

GIRARD — The Blue Devils (1-0) took a 12-6 lead in the first quarter and were rolling 32-21 at intermission. Matthias Tayala scored 14 points for McDonald and Nick Rota finished with 12. Tom Orr pulled down seven rebound and Lance Ronghi had six assists.

Joe Augustine and Raymond Byrd scored seven points apiece for the Indians (0-1). Byrd grabbed eight rebounds, while Mat Pagano had four assists.

LaBrae 74, Struthers 68

LEAVITTSBURG — Matt Szorady scored 18 points for LaBrae, which outscored Struthers in the third quarter, 28-11, to prevail.

Struthers’ Nate Jacubec also had 18 points, while Matt Durkin tallied 14 and Ja °Miere Brown and Jake Jacubec 11 apiece.

Hubbard 77, Brookfield 66

BROOKFIELD — Kurtis Drummond poured in 27 points, while Bobby Thompson had 19 and Mike Lopuchovsky 14 for the Eagles.

Sam Bellino chipped in 12 points for Hubbard, which had a 29-22 field goal advantage.

For the Warriors, Anthony Uberti registered 22 points, while Greg Hunkus had 13.

Liberty 60, Champion 52

CHAMPION — Liberty outscored Champion over the final three quarters, 52-37, en route to victory.

Tashaun Letlow had 18 points, while Blair Williams and Anthony Cleveland each added 16 points for the Leopards, who rang up 25 field goals to Champion’s 17.

Of Liberty 28’s rebounds, Letlow and Cleveland had six apiece, while Williams had four assists.

For Champion, David Barnes had 15 points, while Derek Sumner had nine points and six of the Golden Flashes’ 21 rebounds.

Wellsville 68, Beaver Local 48

LISBON — Falling behind 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, Wellsville took command as it held a 29-21 lead at halftime before bumping it up to 52-33 after three periods.

Jeremy Carter triggered the Tigers’ attack with 32 points. Nunzio Lombardozze added 18. Jake Lunders led the Beavers with 15 points.
