Newspaper seeks buyer

DENVER (AP) — Rocky Mountain News Editor John Temple said Friday he isn’t giving up hope that a buyer will emerge before the mid-January deadline the owners set for selling the newspaper.

Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co. put the News up for sale Thursday, citing losses that could reach $15 million this year. Scripps, which has owned the News since 1926, said it may close the paper if a buyer isn’t found.

The News is Colorado’s oldest newspaper and has been owned by Scripps since 1926. It fought a protracted and draining newspaper war with The Denver Post until 2001, when Scripps entered a joint operating agreement with The Post’s parent, Denver-based Media- News Group Inc.
