Thom McDaniels resigns as coach
MASSILLON — Citing “personal circumstances,” Thom McDaniels, 59, resigned as football coach at Jackson High School Friday.
McDaniels was head coach at Canton McKinley for 16 seasons, winning a state title in 1997. He also spent seven seasons at Warren Harding.
Indoor soccer
CORTLAND — Farmer Jim’s Indoor Soccer Complex will be the site of the “Back to School Soccer Tournament” on Jan 2-4, 2009.
The tournament is open for boys and girls teams in the u-10, u-12, u-14, JV and varsity divisions.

LA Gunz appears
COLUMBIANA — The pro-wrestling tag team LA Gunz, Flea and Axex, will be at Health Matters today from noon until 5 p.m. for an autograph and picture session.
The LaGunz are two time and current Real Action Wrestling tag team champions current UWC High Octane tag team champions.
Aulet inducted
HIRAM — Ron Aulet, a former Hiram College baseball player from Niles High, was one of seven inductees into the William H. Hollinger Hall of Fame for outstanding student-athletes at the school.
Aulet, who won the Campbell Award while a senior at Hiram as the top male student-athlete, currently is assistant athletics director of facilities and operations at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
Prep hockey
BOARDMAN — Canfield High fell to Midview, 2-1, in a Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League-Blue South Division game.
Midview took a 2-0 lead into the third period and held on after a Joe Geiser goal for the Cardinals with 12 minutes left.
Canfield (3-4, 0-1) plays Nordonia Sunday at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills.

Sabathia repeats
OKLAHOMA CITY — CC Sabathia has been named winner of the 2008 Warren Spahn Award for the best left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball.
This is the second straight Spahn Award for Sabathia, who went 17-10 with a career best 2.70 ERA for Cleveland and Milwaukee last season.
Sabathia was traded by the Indians midseason to Milwaukee, where he went 11-2 to lead the Brewers to the National League playoffs.
Maddux to retire
Greg Maddux, who won four Cy Young Awards and 355 games, will announce his retirement Monday.
Maddux will hold a news conference at baseball’s winter meetings in his hometown of Las Vegas, according to a statement from his agent, Scott Boras.
Maddux, 42, closed out his career with the Dodgers. He did not start in the playoffs and made his final appearance in the National League Championship Series, mopping up for Chad Billingsley in the game in which the Philadelphia Phillies eliminated the Dodgers.
Maddux, a nine-time All-Star while pitching for the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs, started his major-league career in 1986. His 355 victories rank eighth in major league history, one more than Roger Clemens.
Day makes a surge
LA QUINTA, Calif. — Glen Day, a former PGA Tour winner trying to make it through Q-school finals for the second time in three years, took a big step Friday with an 8-under 64 to share the lead with James Nitties at the halfway point.
Day and Nitties (69) were at 15-under 201 through three rounds. The six-round tournament concludes Monday, with the top 25 and ties earning their cards for 2009.
Wie shoots 72
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Michelle Wie offset her mistakes with enough birdies Friday, shooting a par 72 that left her two shots behind and still in good shape at the LPGA Tour qualifying tournament.
Mollie Fankhauser shot a 66 on the tougher Legends course, host of all the top players in the third round, and finished at 12-under 204. She has a one-shot lead over Japan’s Shiho Oyama, who had a 71.
Wie was another shot behind at 10-under 206 with Stacy Lewis, who made 12 straight pars.
Notre Dame in final
CARY, N.C. — Courtney Barg scored in the 15th minute and Notre Dame beat Stanford 1-0 Friday to reach the championship of the NCAA Women’s College Cup.
The Fighting Irish (26-0-0), who are in the final four for the third straight year, will play in the final Sunday.
