Zordich, Hughes lead Mooney to 61-45 win over Springfield


NEW MIDDLETOWN — Junior Dominique Zordich had eight of her 18 points in the first quarter and senior Katie Hughes had five of her 17 in that stretch to spark the Cardinal Mooney High girls basketball team to a 61-45 win over Springfield on Thursday.

Up 32-23 at halftime, Mooney (1-1) had eight different players put up points in the third quarter when the Cardinals outscored the home team, 19-8. Mooney’s 20-point lead entering the final quarter sealed the outcome.

Rachael Kennedy’s 12 points and Andria Lyons’ 10 points paced the Tigers. Kennedy also grabbed five of Springfield’s 20 rebounds.

Warren Harding 47, East 40

YOUNGSTOWN — The Raiders (2-1) built a 37-24 lead by the end of the third quarter and the Panthers (1-1) couldn’t catch up.

Kourtney Williams and Audrea Baldridge scored 13 and 12 points respectively for Warren Harding.

Brionna Datson led East with 14 points and she also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Beaver Local 57, Wellsville 42

LISBON — Beaver Local (2-2) had a 14-11 lead after one quarter and never fell behind in evening its record at 2-2.

Senior guard Macy Weber had 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while junior guard Sam Cianni had 13 points and four steals.

Poland 66, Lakeview 27

POLAND — Missy Haug had 12 points, including a pair of 3-point goals, and six rebounds while Alyssa Testa also scored 12 points to lead Poland (1-1).

Jordan St. Clair had nine points for Lakeview.

United 77, Warren JFK 40

WARREN — Hillary Hoppel scored 14 points and Maggie Sell added 12 for United.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 24-11 first quarter lead and JFK never got any closer.

Page Kleric led the Eagles with 18 points, while Stephanie Cervi had 12 rebounds.

Campbell 39, Western Reserve 25

BERLIN CENTER — Jayaira Grhim had 12 points and six rebounds while Tashira Uceta added five points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists to lead Campbell (2-0).

Latonya Butler contributed five points and six rebounds while Brande Ellington had six rebounds to aid the Red Devils.

Colleen Kennechan had 10 points, including two 3-point goals, to lead Western Reserve.

Lisbon 58, Southern 28

SALINEVILLE — Megan Reynolds scored 18 points and Lisbon outscored Southern 19-0 in the third quarter to end the suspense.

Mindy Jackson added 12 points and Anna Dunn 11 points and eight rebounds for the Blue Devils (1-0). Katy Snoddy had seven assists and Abbey Brammer had eight steals.

Maddy Dowling had nine points and nine rebounds for Southern (0-2).

Sebring 34, Heartland Christian 29

SEBRING — The Trojans’ Jill Bragg scored seven points and she pulled down seven rebounds and had four steals. Taylor added six points and she grabbed seven rebounds and had seven steals.

Mineral Ridge 55, Jackson-Milton 37

NORTH JACKSON — With the score tied 11 at the end of the first quarter, the Rams pulled away with a 18-8 surge to lead 29-19 at intermission.

Abby Riffee triggered the Rams’ attack with 14 points. Tara Yacavone chipped in with 11. Maddie Griffiths led the Bluejays with 16 points.

Columbiana 54, Leetonia 32

COLUMBIANA — The Clippers (2-1), ahead 27-20 at halftime, put the game as it blanked the Bears 14-0 in the third quarter.

Kaylee Couchenour scored 10 points and she pulled down 10 rebounds and six steals for the Clippers. Katie Witmer scored a game-high 18 points and Haley Goist added 12. Clarissa Perkins led the Bears with nine points.

Brookfield 50, Badger 26

BROOKFIELD — Shannon Snow had 18 points and Paig Wallace 16 to lead Brookfield (1-1), which led 15-2 after one quarter.

Jordan Moy scored eight points for Badger.

Lordstown 48, Bristol 46

BRISTOLVILLE — Senior center Brianna Blodgett had 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Lindsay Harrison made four of her 18 points from 3-point range for Lordstown.

Harrison, a guard, also had four steals. Junior guard Kelsey Wickline added 12 points for the Red Devils (2-0).

With Lordstown ahead, 48-45, with one second remaining, Bristol senior Alyssa Giesy was fouled. She made the first free throw, but missed the next two. Giesy was the game’s top scorer with 28 points, seven of which were 3s.
