Milwaukee topples Detroit in Horizon


Green Bay posted a 57-46 win over Wright State in another league win.

MILWAUKEE — Tone Boyle scored 21 points and Anthony Hill 16 to lead Wisconsin-Milwaukee to a 71-62 victory over Detroit in the Horizon League opener for both teams Thursday night.

The Panthers (4-4) snapped a three-game losing streak that included losses to state rivals Wisconsin and Marquette.

For the Titans (2-4), Xavier Keeling scored 19 points, Woody Payne 17 and Donavan Foster 11.

Milwaukee outscored Detroit 12-2 to go ahead for good at 53-46 with 8:13 left to play. A 3-pointer by Deion James capped the run.

The first half ended in a 27-27 tie.

The victory gives Milwaukee a 16-15 lead in the all-time series between the schools.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Randy Berry and Mike Schachtner scored 13 points each to lead Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Green Bay held Wright State to 33.3 percent shooting from the field but didn’t do much better itself, making just 34.2 percent.

The Phoenix (4-2) made up for it by sinking 27 of 32 free throws to win a fourth straight game.

Cory Cooperwood, shutout in the first half because of foul trouble, had 14 points to lead Wright State (0-5).

It took Green Bay more than seven minutes to score its first basket, but Berry kept the Phoenix in the game from the foul line. The Phoenix then pulled away to a 33-19 halftime lead with a 20-2 run, holding the Raiders without a basket for about nine minutes.

Saint Mary’s, Calif. 75, Kent St. 69

KENT — Patrick Mills scored 26 points, including 19 in the second half as Saint Mary’s of California took control.

Omar Samhan had 19 and Carlin Hughes added 14 for Saint Mary’s (6-1).

Brandon Parks and Chris Singletary scored 16 points apiece for Kent State (3-4), and Al Fisher had 14.
