Downtown road closing
YOUNGSTOWN — Boardman Street between Hazel Street and Vindicator Square will be closed Monday through Friday because of demolition work on the historic State Theatre. A crane will be placed on Boardman Street for the remaining demolition of the building.
The posted detour for Boardman Street eastbound will be Vindicator Square to Front Street to Hazel Street. The posted detour for Boardman Street westbound will be Hazel Street to Federal Street to Vindicator Square.
Pot on stove causes fire
YOUNGSTOWN — A pot left unattended on the stove at 419 Glacierview Drive on the West Side started a fire around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, the fire department said. No injuries were reported.
The fire was confined to the stove and microwave above it. Damage was estimated at $4,500.
Bicyclist hit by car
AUSTINTOWN — Police said a man was hospitalized after he rode his bicycle into the path of a car. Just after noon Wednesday, 61-year-old James Osso of Youngstown was hit as he crossed Mahoning Avenue.
Lt. Bryan Kloss said the car driver, Lindsay Salen, 19, of Austintown was traveling south on Meridian Road, when Osso rode the bike in front of her at the intersection of Meridian and Mahoning.
Osso was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. He was in fair condition Thursday. Salen was not injured.
Pets’ photos with Santa
AUSTINTOWN — Have your pet’s photo taken with Santa from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Complete Petmart, 5543 Mahoning Ave. The store is in the Weston Center, behind Walgreens drugstore.
A donation of $10 for the photo will benefit Second Chance Animal Rescue. A coupon with each paid picture can be redeemed for a free box of dog biscuits.
Free gun locks available
NEW MIDDLETOWN — The New Middletown Police Department is offering free gun locks to adults as a way to promote gun safety during the hunting and holiday seasons. The locks can be used for all types of firearms and come with a safety manual.
Gun locks may be picked up at the municipal building on Main Street, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program is a joint effort between the police department and Project Childsafe.
Turnpike tolls to rise
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Drivers on the Pennsylvania Turnpike were reminded that the new year will usher in tolls that are 25 percent higher, with additional increases planned for future years. The decision to impose higher tolls was made a year and a half ago with the passage of a landmark transportation bill. On Thursday, turnpike officials outlined the new toll schedule and noted that the money helps subsidize 74 mass transit agencies and repair the state’s bridges and roads.
Hubbard parade canceled
HUBBARD — The Christmas parade set for 6 p.m. Saturday in the city has been canceled and will not be rescheduled, city officials said.
Leetonia leaf pickup
LEETONIA — The first round of leaf pick up has been completed on the village’s north side. Pickup on the south side began Wednesday. Once the first round on the south side is completed, the leaf vacuum machine will begin the second and final round on the north side.
