Columbiana Co. 4-H honors volunteers and supporters


WINONA — Columbiana County 4-H volunteers and supporters received recognition at a banquet Nov. 15 at the Winona Friends Church.

Those receiving special recognition follow:

• Lynn Guy, for heading the health and safety demonstrations and for her role as dean of women at 4-H camps.

• Mark Chestnut, Jay Swords and Brad Strong, for helping to build the new 4-H office at the county fairgrounds.

• Mary Ann Szalkowski, for Junior Fair Board work and her work as co-dean of women at camps.

• Connie Higbee, for making the Fair Committee badges .

• George Chelbus, for being the “Kiss A Pig” person.

• Sue Himes, for her years of helping with the 4-H raffle and the volunteer banquet.

• Bette Allen, who heads the 4-H FFA Scholarship Awards program and has brought 4-H to the attention of the Moose Lodge in East Liverpool. The lodge generously donates its bingo money to the 4-H.

• Carl Barrick, a new 4-H adviser who made innovations to his 4-H Club, such as setting up Web pages and slide shows of the members at the fair with their projects.

Other recognition went to Jim Luonuansuu, the men’s dean at camp, and to Gary Booth, who is not an official volunteer but is always available to help. Special recognition went to Ken Baer of Baer Auctioneers for the 40 years that his family has been the auctioneers of the Junior Market projects.

Julia Herron, a 4-H educator, reported on some new 4-H changes coming up next year. Jim Risinger, chairman of the Rabbit and Poultry Committee, reported on the progress the committee is making on offering Market Turkey projects for 2010.
