GIRARD — Youngstown East High School’s mentally handicapped/developmentally handicapped special-education units will have the eighth annual special-needs Winterfest dance from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mahoning Country Club, 710 Liberty St. S.E.
The dance is open to all high school students with multiple, orthopedic and/or developmental disabilities. Dress is semi-formal for students; parents are not permitted to stay.
A Snow Princess and Snow Prince drawing will take place. Names of the Winterfest dance court will be randomly drawn.

North Side house fire
YOUNGSTOWN — City fire officials are investigating the cause of a weekend house fire on the city’s North Side.
Just after 3 a.m. Saturday, the fire department was called to 303 Jefferson St. to extinguish a blaze in the home’s bathroom.
Jason Barnes said he woke up around 3:15 a.m. and saw a fire burning in the bathroom wall. He said he thinks the fire may have originated in an electrical space heater he’d left running in the corner of the bathroom.
The official cause is still under investigation by the fire department. Damage to the property, owned by Barnes’ grandmother, Mildred Barnes, totaled $6,500.
Armed robbery at store
AUSTINTOWN — An employee of a North Canfield-Niles Road convenience store reported being robbed at gunpoint early Monday. The employee of Country Fair told police that a man came into the store about 3:50 a.m. Monday, looked around and then asked if the store sold beer. The employee told him they did but could not sell any until 6 a.m.
The man then pulled out a handgun and said, “Give me all the money, youngster.” The employee gave him money from the register, and the man left the store. The employee called police.
Family swim sessions
WARREN — Free family swim sessions will be provided to the public at the new state-of-the-art swimming pool inside Warren Harding High School from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 12 and 19. Adult supervision is required for children. A lifeguard will be on duty, and locker-room facilities will be available. For more information, call the athletic office at (330) 841-2316.
History for children
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Historical Center plans a history program for children 8 to 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 13 at the center, 151 W. Wood St.
The program, called “1912,” will focus on popular culture of that era, including ragtime music, sports heroes, literature and other important figures and stories. The program costs $10 for Ohio Historical Society members and $12 for nonmembers. To register or for more information call (330) 743-5934.
