Workshop will target tree identification, planting tips

STAFF REPORT

CORTLAND — “Tree Identification: Special Emphasis on Oaks/Acorns” will be the first fall training session for area residents interested in learning more about their landscape as well as practical do’s and don’ts of planting new trees.

The workshop will be 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 18, at the Ohio State University Agricultural Complex, 520 W. Main St.

Presenters are two local master gardeners, Joyce Hamilton and Trudy Pheil-Houk, who recently completed a two-year specialization course offered by the state.

“This workshop is our way of giving back to the community and sharing our knowledge,” Pheil-Houk said. Dress according to weather conditions as part of this workshop will be outside. Leaves, bark and other characteristics will be used to identify trees during a walk along the newly opened pathways at the Agricultural Complex, she added.

Register for this workshop by calling (330) 638-6783. Cost is $20. Training programs are open to the public.

“We encourage anyone with and interest in gardening or landscaping to come out and meet other gardeners and to share in these educational opportunities,” said Kathleen Ferris, program chairwoman.
