BOARDMAN — The Northern Ohio Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is having its Great Strides fund raiser Saturday at Boardman Township Park starting at 10 a.m.

Check-in time for the 5K walk is 9 a.m.

Participants raise money for cystic fibrosis through donations and pledges. Local sponsors include Aetna, Humility of Mary Health Partners and DDi. Outback of Niles will provide lunch for the participants.

Help Hotline offers classes

YOUNGSTOWN — Help Hotline Crisis Center is offering free training for people interested in volunteering for the 24-hour hotline.

Classes will meet from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on five consecutive Mondays, Sept. 22 through Oct. 20, and from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 25. To register, call (330) 747-2696.

Volunteers are asked to make a six-month commitment.

Cancer screening offered to low-income women

BOARDMAN — Free mammograms and Pap tests will be offered to low-income Mahoning County women between the ages of 40 and 64 who do not have medical health insurance.

Testing will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 10 and from 4 to 7 on Sept. 24 at Tiffany Breast Care Center, 7067 Tiffany Blvd.

Those interested must schedule an appointment by calling toll free (800) 921-5151. No walk-ins will be accepted.

The cancer screenings are offered by the Mission Possible Breast Cervical Cancer Prevention Coalition. Four physicians and four nurses from the area are volunteering their time, including one female physician who will conduct the Pap test. The Tiffany Breast Care Center is providing the facility for the exams at no cost.

Awakening event set

GIRARD — The Healing Arts Ministry Of Unity Church Centre, 1226 Naylor-Lloyd Road, will offer “Awakening” from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 20.

A bonfire and drumming will begin at 8 p.m. The event uses song, movement and drumming to enhance spiritual understanding, inner wisdom and vibrational awareness.

Preregister by Sept. 19 by calling Carol Ann Drick at (330) 539-0122. Admission is a donation.

Participants should take a water bottle, lawn chair and drums or rattles (optional) and wear loose comfortable clothing. A light meal will be provided.

Work-site wellness is workshop topic

HOWLAND — A conference on how to implement work-site wellness programs will be offered from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Leo’s Ristorante, 7042 E. Market St.

The goal of the workshop is to help companies reduce sickness and absenteeism and improve productivity among employees. It is open to human resource managers, nurses, wellness committee members and resource agencies.

The half-day conference will have a variety of speakers, some whom have already implemented wellness programs.

The cost is $5 per person, which will cover the conference materials. The deadline to register is Tuesday; call (330) 675-7807.
