EAST LIVERPOOL — Two events are scheduled next month and in October at Beaver Creek State Park. A Civil War re-enactment, which offers a look at the life of people living during that period, will be Sept. 12-14 in the park’s Pioneer Village.

The theme is “Jackson in the Valley.” There will be infantry battles Sept. 13, and actual cannon fire from period weapons Sept. 14. A period clothing barn dance will be the evening of Sept. 13 for re-enactors, and spectators are welcome.

The park’s annual “Harvest Days Festival” will be Oct. 4-5. Those attending can enjoy demonstrations of early skills and crafts. Food and craft vendors will be on hand each day. An educational miniature barn raising is planned for children.

Visitors also can observe Gaston’s Mill in operation and take home stone-ground cornmeal, buckwheat flour, or whole wheat flour stone ground and powered by the old water wheel.

Recycling to be topic

YOUNGSTOWN — Recycling will be the topic of the Voices of Youngstown Luncheon at noon Sept. 10 at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane. Mary R. Skateboard competition

CORTLAND — A Skate In the Park, a skateboarding competition in Cortland’s new skateboarding park in Willow Park on Russell Avenue, will be 1 p.m. Sept. 13. Rain date is Sept. 14.

Evolution Skate Shop of Kent and The Stomping Grounds Skate Park of Austintown will provide judging and prizes in three categories: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Additional ramps will be trucked in for the competition by SkateWave, a skate park equipment manufacturer.

Beginners will play S-K-A-T-E, while intermediate and advanced competitors will have three heats of 60 seconds to perform feats on their boards.

Beekeepers to meet

CORTLAND — The Trumbull County Beekeepers Association will meet at 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at Trumbull County Agricultural Building, 520 W. Main St. Apitherapist Jim Higgins will speak on the health benefits of the products of the hive: honey, pollen, propolis and royal jelly. It is free and open to the public. A potluck dinner is provided after the meeting.

Free museum programs

YOUNGSTOWN — The Children’s Museum of the Valley, 139 E. Boardman St., offers two admission-free programs this week. On Wednesday, from 5 to 8 p.m., families can explore simple machines and gears during the monthly Community Night Program. Activities will include exploring pulleys, levers and hammers and experiments with simple machines. Free bus coupons are available for this program by calling the museum at (330) 744-5914.

On Friday, Rudy Fowler, from the band Rudy and the Professionals, will host the museum’s free Super Star Story Special program. Visitors who arrive between 10 and 10:45 a.m. will receive free admission until noon. Rudy will read “My Little Island” by Frane Lessac.
