Scrappers’ two rallies in vain, lose in 10th, 4-3

The Spikes had lost 10 pone-run games in August.

UNIVERSITY PARK — They battled and scrapped, but in the end, they just came up short.

Battling from behind not once, but twice to tie the game, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers took their only lead of the game with a single run in the top of the tenth.

However, they couldn’t hold on for the win as the State College Spikes scored a pair in the bottom of the 10th to pull out a 4-3 win.

“We didn’t do a lot of hitting and as a result, we didn’t score a lot of runs,” said Scrapper manager Travis Fryman. “We battled to get the lead, but didn’t have enough pitching to hold it.”

The game featured a pitching duel between the Eddie Burns of the Scrappers and Carlos Amaro of the Spikes.

When the final issue was decided, neither pitcher figured in the decision.

Burns has been with the club for just a short time and he was impressive. He worked four innings, allowing just a pair of hits, walking nobody and striking out seven.

“He [Burns] was good. He did real good,” said Fryman. “We were thinking that we would only get three [innings] out of him because we have only had him for about a week-and-a-half. He has had one other start for us and he looked pretty good in that one as well. When he kept his pitch count down, we were able to get four out of him tonight. I just wish that we would have had him all year.”

The Spikes had lost 10 games decided by a single run in August.

“It has been a lot more fun for us the last five days,” said Spikes manager Brad Fischer. “But I think the proudest moment and the most fun we have had all year was that moment that just happened, you know, the guys having a chance to run out onto the field after a come-from-behind win because I don’t think we have done that at all this year.”

The Spikes dented the scoring column first in the second inning when Kyle Morgan, who had seven hits in three recent games against the Scrappers, took an 0-1 offering from Eddie Burns and drove it into the right field bleachers for a 1-0 State College lead.

After having their first nine batters retired in order, the Scrappers tied the game on a double by

Ryan Blair, a single by Cord Phelps and a RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Tim Fedroff.

With the 1-all deadlock holding into the fifth inning, the Spikes again took their second lead of the game with a single run in the fifth, but again the Scrappers fought back to tie the game at 2-all.

With one out, Lonnie Chisenhall singled to center and went to third on a single to right by Jeremie Tice.

Brock Simpson worked Spike relief pitcher Matt Foust for a base on balls, and when the fourth ball to Simpson got away from the catcher, Chisenhall scored and Tice hustled all the way from first to third.

However, Foust turned to damage control as he struck out Zach Booker looking before coaxing Robby Alcombrack to pop out to second.

Then came the frantic 10th inning when the Scrappers captured their first lead in the game on a walk to Blair, an infield single by Cord Phelps and a RBI single by Tim Fedroff before seeing it evaporate into a frustrating 4-3 loss.

“Our bullpen did OK,” said Fryman. “Mark Rodrigues is just coming off of an injury and he is not to where he had been before and Hinkle has been throwing the ball pretty good for us, but he took the loss tonight.

“Let’s put it this way. It was a good day for State College.”
