Firefighters kept busy today battling two South Side blazes


YOUNGSTOWN — Fire damage was set at $130,000 after a fire at 12:45 a.m. today at 838 E. Midlothian Blvd., a three-story apartment building on the South Side.

Reports show the fire started in the kitchen of a third-floor apartment. No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation. One firefighter who got debris in his eye had it flushed out at the scene. The Red Cross was called to the building to determine the necessity of housing displaced residents.

At 4:10 a.m. today, firefighters sent to a vacant house at 554 E. Florida Ave. saw heavy fire showing on the second floor. The deliberately set fire did $12,000 damage.
